We have this stool in our bathroom that we bought when potty training our middle child, Tylor. He was a tiny little guy and very afraid of the loud, scary potty. But that being said he would not, by any means go potty in a little potty chair. So we got one of those kid stools for the bathroom. You know the ones, they are short and pink or blue with the skid free feet. Well, even with that stool he couldn't get all the way on the potty without falling in. So when we were at the store one day we spotted this taller wooden stool. It is pretty, like one you would have in your kitchen to reach the tallest shelf. We picked it up and brought it home. Ty loved it. He depended on it for everything. For going potty, washing hands, brushing teeth, climbing onto things that he didn't need to get to, reaching way beyond where I wanted him to :o)
So that was in 2004 we bought this stool. It is now 2010 and Tylor is much taller now. He can do just about everything without this stool, but he doesn't. He depends on this stool to be where he needs or wants it. He still has to have it in the bathroom when he goes potty or brushes his teeth. Now looking at it and him one would think he doesn't need it anymore. It helped him when he was in need of help, but now does he really need it?
That brings me to what God is teaching me. (I know what you are saying, what does a bathroom stool have to do with God. - but hang in there with me for a minute.)God is like that stool. We look for Him, lean on Him, climb on Him, use Him for our needs and wants. But then we grow up a little and life seems a little smoother. We don't need help reaching certain things anymore. We are "old" enough to do it all on our own. Or so it may seem.
Going back to that stool, Tylor very much feels safer and better knowing his stool is there. He cares for it. Cleans it. Moves it where he is all the time. Uses it. Loves it.
Is that what we are doing with God? Are we using the relationship we had in the beginning? Are we carrying Him with us? Are we depending on Him, even if others think we are too old for such things? God wants us to depend on Him. He wants to be there holding our hand, helping us climb and giving us the security we need to do the things that need to be done.
Take some time today and think about how much dependence you have on our Father. How much you take Him with you and keep Him near by. Have a blessed day!
