"Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the LORD's hands double for all her sins. A voice cries out: 'In the wilderness prepares the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every moutian and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.'" Isaiah 40:1-5
Prepare the Way!
The distinctive prophet of the Advent season, Isaiah had a wonderful way of stiring up hope in the people at the same time he challenged them to give up their sins and turn back to God. Isaiah spoke to the people about a kingdom of peace, about the steel of swords turned into blades of plows, and about a coming king who would bring justice and mercy. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Isaiah foretold the Lord's coming as no other prophet, and so his words are read thoughtout the Advent season.
We have an advantage over Isaiah: we know Jesus came and we know that He redeemed us by the cross. We treasure the words of Isaiah each Advent because he reminds us to prepare the way of the Lord. Jesus is going to come again in the fulfill of time, and God's glory will be revealed once and for all.
Good and glorious God, Your Words in Scripture remind us of the promises You have made. May we listen to them and remember they are true. May the words of the prophet Isaiah help us as we prepare to welcome the Lord. Amen.
