"The daughter of Pharaoh... saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid to bring it. When she opened it, she saw the child. He was crying, and she took pity on him, 'This must be one of the Hebrews' children,' she said... Pharaoh's daughter named him Moses, 'because,' she said, 'I drew him out of the water.'" - Exodus 2:5-6, 10
Let My People Go!
Moses was threatened the moment he was born, just as Jesus was. While Moses was found amid the reeds by the river, Jesus lay in the straw of a manger. Moses led his people out of Egypt, while Jesus set his people free from sin. Moses gave the people the Ten Commandments; Jesus gave us the Two Great Commandments: to love God and love your neighbors as yourself.
If Moses was the answer to the prayers of the Hebrew slaves in Egypt, then how much more is Jesus the answer to the prayers of all people trapped in sin or terrified of death?
We remember Moses as a great hero of faith and courage against a powerful opponent in the Pharaoh. As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus and the beginning of the story of our Redemption, let us recall the many ways the God has set us free.
Liberating God, may we always remember that freedom means being able to do the right thing. May we never abuse Your gift of freedom by breaking Your commandments. Amen.
